In December, Dragør transforms into a magical town. The old streets glow with warm lights, wooden stalls line the square, and the town takes on the storybook atmosphere of a Christmas miracle. It is within this setting that Jessica Lai’s Dreams of Dreams of Dreams… exhibition unfolds.
Jessica Lai’s illustrations move through this seasonal atmosphere with a natural affinity. Her works are built from fragments of memory, imagination, and the drifting logic of dreams.
Born in Taipei, shaped by California, trained in architecture, and now based in Copenhagen, Jessica carries a layered visual vocabulary. Childhood picture books, graphic novels, manga, architectural patterns, and everyday humour all converge into images that feel familiar yet quietly surreal, like moments half-remembered from a dream and many more dreams.
In this exhibition, scenes fold into one another; characters move between worlds; landscapes behave like memories. The title, Dreams of Dreams of Dreams… mirrors this feeling of continuous unfolding. Dreams dream themselves, stories generate new stories, and imagination is rewarded with more beautiful imagination.
The Christmas-town ambience of Dragør heightens this. The wonderful winter light, the hush of early evenings, the sense of ritual and anticipation. All of it echoes Jessica’s sensitivity to atmosphere and emotional nuance. Her illustrations become small sanctuaries within the busy season, places where time slows down and interior worlds open.
Jessica’s architectural training brings structure and rhythm to her compositions, while her love of storytelling introduces warmth, humour, and emotional clarity. The result is deeply human work: playful but thoughtful, intuitive yet precise. Her images hold the lightness of fantasy and the weight of lived experience in equal measure.
To encounter these works in December is to be reminded that dreaming is a way of making sense of the world. As Dragør wraps itself in winter and ritual, Jessica’s illustrations mirror the state of the last month of the year: reflective, drifting, tender, and open to wonder.
In Jessica Lai’s Dreams of Dreams of Dreams…, every image offers a doorway into memory, imagination, and the magical spaces where stories are born and worlds are built.
